Direct answer
Prepare one controlled private-label project pack containing the target-market brief, SKU and model matrix, technical requirements, vector brand assets, label and packaging content, language list, required evidence, sample-validation plan and named approval owners. Keep unknowns visible. A supplier cannot responsibly confirm compatibility, certification scope, MOQ, price or delivery from a logo file alone.
Who is this guide for?
This checklist is for brand owners and OEM/ODM buyers starting an EV charging product project. It helps purchasing collect decisions from product, design, compliance and sales before the supplier begins repeated quotation and artwork revisions.
What belongs in the project pack?
| Folder | Minimum buyer input | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 01 Market and use | Countries, channel, user, installation/use environment | Sets the context for product and document review |
| 02 SKU matrix | SKU name, equipment role, connector direction, AC/DC, quantity estimate | Prevents variants from being mixed |
| 03 Technical brief | Supply, current/power class, cable, controls, conditions | Allows model matching; values need confirmation |
| 04 Brand assets | Vector logo, colors, fonts, usage rules | Gives design a controlled source |
| 05 Labels and documents | Languages, required content, barcode ownership, manual needs | Defines deliverables and reviewers |
| 06 Evidence request | Datasheet, drawing, test/report scope, sample records | Separates evidence from marketing claims |
| 07 Approval plan | Owners, due dates, sample setup and change process | Makes release decisions traceable |
How should you build the SKU matrix?
Give each intended saleable variant its own row. Record the product role before the connector names: portable EVSE, AC cable, adapter or DC assembly. Then list charger-side and vehicle-side interfaces, AC or DC mode, market, supply or charger context, cable length, accessories, packaging language and planned brand name. Mark all values “requested” until the supplier confirms the exact model and revision.
This entity mapping matters. The vehicle inlet does not define the wall plug; a Type 2 vehicle connector does not prove single- or three-phase operation; and a visually similar adapter may have the opposite direction. Avoid pronouns such as “it works with this” in the brief. Name both pieces of equipment.
Which technical details should buyers provide?
Provide the intended voltage/phase context for AC products or charger/vehicle context for DC products, requested current or power class, cable length, environmental use, storage needs, controls, display language and accessory set. These are requirements, not approved specifications. Ask the supplier to answer with a model, revision, datasheet, drawing, assumptions and open issues.
Which brand files prevent artwork delays?
Send vector logo files, controlled colors, minimum size, clear-space rules, approved brand name spelling, typeface permissions and examples of prohibited use. Also state who owns and supplies barcodes, QR destinations and legal company details. Do not provide certification marks for placement until their use is confirmed for the exact model and target market.
What evidence should be requested?
Request a model-specific datasheet and drawing, label and packaging proof, applicable document list, sample-validation plan and revision/change record. If the project depends on a test report or certificate, ask for its model scope, issuing source and applicable version. Evidence must be reviewed by the responsible buyer or local specialist; the presence of a PDF does not automatically make a claim valid in every market.
Who approves what?
Name one owner for the technical model, one for regulated or market content, one for brand artwork and one for commercial release. A small team may give several roles to one person, but the decisions should still be explicit. Record approvals by file revision and date. A chat message saying “looks good” is not enough when the file later changes.
A practical kickoff sequence
- Create the market brief and preliminary SKU matrix.
- Ask the supplier to map each row to a proposed model and revision.
- Resolve connector direction, equipment role and electrical assumptions first.
- Exchange controlled artwork and document requirements.
- Approve dimensioned proofs before producing the representative sample.
- Validate the sample with intended equipment and conditions; qualified personnel handle required electrical safety work.
- Freeze the approved product, artwork and packaging revisions.
- Put change notification and re-approval rules into the order handoff.
Common missing inputs
Projects often stall because the destination market, input connection, connector direction, language owner, accessory list or approval owner is missing. Other risky gaps are an undefined barcode source and a request to print ratings before the final model is selected. Keep these items open rather than guessing.
What remains order-specific?
Customization availability, tooling, MOQ, sample cost, price, capacity and delivery plan depend on the model and order. Certification scope and compatibility also require exact evidence. This checklist helps a supplier evaluate the project; it does not establish any of those facts.
FAQ
Can I start a private-label EV charger project with only a logo?
You can start a conversation, but not a reliable model or artwork approval. At minimum, add the market, product role, connector direction, technical context, quantity estimate and document needs.
Who should provide the barcode?
State barcode ownership in the project pack. The brand owner or importer commonly controls commercial identifiers, but the agreed party must provide verified data for the actual SKU.
When should the specification be frozen?
Freeze the technical model before final artwork, then freeze the complete product, artwork and packaging revisions after representative-sample validation and before volume release.
