Direct answer
Most EV charging gun OEM projects can customize the market configuration, cable length and construction, housing colour, label, packaging, manual and accessory set. Some changes affect the electrical or mechanical design and require a new sample or validation; cosmetic artwork changes do not automatically make a product compatible with a different vehicle or charger.
What can usually be customized?
| Customization | Typical buyer decision | Re-validation trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Connector and equipment role | AC inlet, vehicle connector, or DC assembly | Any interface, pin or mating change |
| Cable | Length, outer jacket, colour and marking | Conductor, temperature or current change |
| Housing | Colour, texture and moulded branding | Tooling, fit, heat or strength change |
| Label and manual | Language, warnings, model name and QR code | New model, market or safety information |
| Packaging and accessories | Carton, insert, bag, hook or adapter set | New dimensions, protection or included item |
What should be frozen before a sample?
Freeze the target market, AC or DC role, connector direction, current and voltage class, cable length, environmental conditions, model name, required markings, languages, accessories and evidence needed for approval. Put unknown items in an open-issues list rather than treating them as included.
How does an OEM change move through approval?
- Submit an RFQ with the intended use and model fields.
- Receive the proposed model, drawings, revision and assumptions.
- Approve artwork against that exact revision.
- Test the representative sample with the intended EVSE, supply and vehicle or load setup.
- Freeze the approved version; require written review for later changes.
What cannot be inferred from a logo or colour change?
A new label does not prove a new certification, current rating, IP claim, vehicle compatibility or safety function. Those statements require model- and market-specific evidence. The manufacturer should identify which change is cosmetic and which changes the tested configuration.
Common mistakes
Buyers often request “the same product with our logo” while leaving connector direction, cable length, plug, language and included accessories unstated. Another frequent error is approving packaging before the model revision is frozen.
FAQ
Can I customize the connector after sampling?
Treat a connector change as a new configuration. Recheck fit, pin assignment, cable termination and validation scope before approval.
Does private labeling require a new certificate?
It depends on the market, document scope and what changed. Ask the supplier and the relevant conformity body to confirm rather than assuming.
Can packaging be changed without changing the product?
Often yes, but confirm dimensions, protection, warnings, language and included items against the approved sample.
